Nothing easier than adding a cool "aqua-like" shortcut to Blogdimension.com - your prefered Web 2.0 Search Engine - on your iPhone or iPod Touch home screen.

1) From your device, open Safari and navigate directly to http://www.blogdimension.com

2) At the bottom of the current screen, tap on the '+'

3) A menu with four options shows up, tap "Add to home screen"

4) A new screen appears where you can notice the "Blogdimension" icon

5) Add or complete the word "Blogdimension" in the form just right from the icon

Et voilà !

A nice icon should appear now on your iPhone or iPod Touch home screen allowing you to access directly to Blogdimension.com

Why not doing the same for your own website or blog?

It's very easy! You must first design the favicon for your website in an image editor (like Gimp). The picture should be 57 x 57 pixels. Name it "apple-touch-icon.png" (the image should be saved under "PNG" format). Upload this file and place it to the root of your website. Carry out the same operations as described above for Blogdimension. You will then have the shortcut of your own website on your iPhone or iPod Touch home screen. The new web is live, tagged, opinion-based and multimedia

We are often asked by the media and journalists what makes Blogdimension a different search engine. We, at "BD", usually reply basically we focus on "Web 2.0" content.

But we find it quite uneasy to explain about our positioning because the Internet content we give access to our users has no clear definition yet.

Q: What is then this still undefined Web content you call "Web 2.0 content"?

A: the type of content BD gives access to is characterized at least by one or several of the following aspects:

1) Real time and live web

"Live web": it means content that has a limited lifespan. It consists of RSS or Atom-like content which we could define as "As soon published, as soon consumed, as soon scrapped". Typically it includes all the blogs, microblogs, forums, online news, podcasts, online videos... NB: our frenemies - from Technorati - also mention the idea of a "live web".
"Real time": next step is to introduce the idea of a real time content. It is not so difficult to implement. The only limitation is technical resources (servers) because this process requires much computation and storage capacity.

2) Tags

There is quite a big difference between Web 1 and Web 2. Previously, a content used to be classified not by the author but on the search engine side when it was indexed. Categories and topics were fixed and defined statically by the webmasters. Today, the author has an active role in sorting out the content by associating descriptive tags. Categories and topics are changing constantly. This new possibility makes now the web really live! One can notice this new phenomenon in tag clouds which are virtually booming on the blogosphere.

3) Opinion and subjectivity

This kind of content has the peculiarity of aggregating users' comments and viewpoints. That means something distinctive from general, informative, encyclopedic or commercial web. Of course, the latter can also include some opinion (personal comments, critics, etc.). In this case they fully enter into Blogdimension's scope.

4) Multimedia

In recent years, the web is going through an increasing amount of multimedia content. The success of online audio and video sharing services speak for themselves. Just carry out a basic search and you will consistently find a bunch of YouTube or Blogdimension video files and tons of podcasts from blogs or other online media mixed in the results.

Q: So, finally, what is Blogdimension's contribution to the Internet search industry?

A: Blogdimension allows the user to search via a single entry-point mainly for:

live,
opinion,
multimedia,
and commented upon

web content.

At the end of the day, the question is: how to clearly define this new kind of web content?

We will definitely have to imagine a new concept. We at Blogdimension suggest "opinion web" or "popular web" because "Web 2.0" appears to be a rather technical definition. "User Generated Web" could also be an option for defining the New Web.

Last month we announced that Blogdimension’s results were available in Zuula metasearch, along with all the other “big” search systems. Today we are proud to be part of the search options also in Blogbar.

Blogbar is now a quite widespread search widget the bloggers can easily add on their blogs or websites. It is a module with a nice look & feel and a typically Web 2.0 style of design. The Blogbar allows your visitors and readers (and yourself of course!) to carry out Internet searches directly from your site.

It is difficult to believe that there are so many powerful search functions (it is in fact a metasearch) hiding behind such a tiny, minimalistic and compact widget. The users can search for in practically all the search engines existing on Internet: all the stars of the search industry and now also Blogdimension.com, the Web 2.0 Search Engine! Like Blogdimension.com, they propose the service in many great languages.

Following one of the two creators of the Blogbar and author of the influential French techno-geek Netwizz blog they decided to add Blogdimension’s results because of (translated) “the quality of their results, filtering options and the rapidity of their page display“. I can tell you we are always quite happy to read such phrases!

But the Blogbar does not only propose a flat scrolling list of search engines. The engines are organized in a smart way by coherent types of search: web search, blog search, job search, social networks and even video search! They still do not propose any audio search… But for that specific search the usesrs can maybe be satisfied by the “podcast search” to be found directly on Blogdimension.com.

Oh yes! I’ve almost forgotten to tell the Blogbar makes it possible to search for your content published on your own blog or website as well. I should even had begun the article by this crucial information!

Okay. We could call it quits with the Blogbar. But we would miss quite a lot other interesting features imagined by its cunning designers. So you can also set your Ad-Sense parameters, if you have any. As you can see, the Blogbar is not only free of charge but can also bring you some little money. Every blogger knows that Ad-Sense is not a real bonanza! Still, this intent shows the Blogbar creators paid some attention to the users’ interest and wallet. A quality that becomes rare in the software or Internet industry.

The setting up of the Blogbar is very easy and the guidelines uncommonly clear. Even a 6-year child could do it!

Blogdimension & Alianzo - the Spanish bloggers' network - are now supporting each other!

There is no any fanatic blogger who has never heard about Alianzo, the most extensive bloggers' and social network and directory "Made in Spain"! Alianzo is a reference in the blogosphere since early 2005 and is known through its regular and much follwed blog listings established on an international basis.

As you know Blogdimension is preparing its new 2.5 release. We don't want to let off the pressure on innovation. So we keep on imagining and designing new useful ideas for our ever demanding users. We owe them innovation!

So, here are three new features in preview of the next major upgrade of Blogdimension.com, the now Web 2.5 Search Engine... in a certain way.

This feature displays the number of times let's say ReadWriteWeb is linked to (or cited) by some other blogs. This is a very useful utility to measure your popularity within the blogosphere, of course through the prism of Blogdimension's index! Other systems will probably give different results. So you can compare between various search engines.

Blogdimension's "Link To" feature indicates two things:
1) How many other blogs link to your blog,
2) Who they are.

This way you can find your allies but also your ennemies... A true social and relational feature!

"See more from this blog"

This one is a bit different. It displays all the posts or articles from a same blog available in Blogdimension's index at a given moment.

So you can have the whole history of a source at a glance within Blogdimension's results page. Of course we deliver only the post or article title, date, author and a short summary. You are then invited to clic on the link to access directly the original article for full reading.

"Cached"

Blogdimension caches some raw text content. We usually deliver only the links. But our technology makes it possible to show some limited content of a post or article. So this is the way to read a post entirely within Blogdimension. But it is strongly recommended you read a content directly where it derives from, we mean on the original blog. A direct link to the source is provided.

We will tell you later why this "cache" function is interesting either for the bloggers (content producers) and their readers. Typically, if the distant blog is down or unaccessible, a cached version of articles or posts can provide satisfaction to the bloggers and their readers by delivering a minimalistic content (like a "spare part" content). But the key idea is that this feature will in fact boost bloggers traffic. We'll tell you why next time. ;-)

So, if you are a bit curious about your blog network or you like to spy upon others then try these new features. May be you will learn something about yourself or the others. ;-)

PS : when using these features you might encounter some slowness. It is because such actions require more computation and resources. Just be patient (few seconds in general).

Five! Five is the number of international languages already available for searching into the vast Web 2.0 dimension with Blogdimension.com!

The Japanese version of Blogdimension.com - the Web 2.0 Search Engine - allows Japanese speaking users to search for contents in their own language. Be they Japanese natives, students, business people or simply lovers of the great Japanese tongue and culture.

They can now find easily all kind of Japanese Web 2.0 sources ie. blogs, microblogs (Twitter, Tumblr, Jaiku...), forums, online news, images, audio files & podcasts, online videos...

All these contents can now be searched directly from a Japanese interface within Blogdimension.com.

No need to mention that the Japanese language is one among the first blogging languages. Sometimes even the first one (see David Sifry's analysis).

It's done! The smart and fully customizable multi-search engine Zuula.com displays now also Blogdimension's blog results!

Zuula.com belongs to the family of metasearch engines. But unlike the other "metas", Zuula proposes an extensive choice of results provided by a clever combination of the most used search brands available on the net.

Like Blogdimension.com, Zuula tends to verticalize its results via a system of tabs. One can search for Internet content by type of sources in a very user-friendly way. The search tabs are: web, images, video, news, blog, jobs... No doubt that some other "verticals" will be added in the future.

Moreover, Zuula is a real "do-it-yourself" engine. Many of the parameters are customizable. For example, you can select or exclude a search engine by simply drag and drop its tab, change their order of appearance, add an "adult search" filter, choose the number of results to be displayed, etc. Of course, all these preferences can be saved so you find your custom search interface next time you use Zuula.

In a standard way, Zuula also proposes its toolbar and an Add-in. Let's call it a widget!

Oh yes! Zuula keeps the sponsored links (those provided by the search systems part of the results displayed in Zuula) well separated from the organic results. So, the users access directly to the true content they are searching for without being polluted by commercial results. This is also a good point which also corresponds to Blogdimension's philosophy.

Zuula is in Beta mode. But they are probably humble at Zuula because their search is in reality already fully functional, fast and provides extremely relevant results!

Blogdimension.com introduces the "tags cloud", a feature to feel the pulse of the blogosphere!

The bloggers and their readers usually do know what are "tags clouds". This feature visible on some websites displays a selection of the most frequently used keywords tagged (that's why they are called "tags") in blog posts or articles. Tags can also be the most searched for words. In general, the most popular tags appear either in the form of characters set in a bigger size, in bold or in a special color whereas less popular tags tend to appear with no particular emphasis. The more the tag is prominent, the more it is popular.

Tags can be compared to a form of website categorization. In the Web 1, Internet content was sorted in predetermined categories (or topics). Formerly, in order to appear in one or another category a website had to be referenced in a web directory or a vertical portal and linked to an existing category. If one of the categories was missing the website could not be sorted out, or the website editor had to ask to the directory's administrator to create a new category. Yahoo built its early succes on this idea that the web should be organized in a centralized way.

However, this approach revealed to be finally inaccurate with reference to the dramatic explosion of content published on Internet. Often, the webmaster submitting a website had to face the "misc." or "unclassifiable" category syndrome since the limited space of a web directory could not propose an unlimited number of categories or sub-categories that would harm to its ergonomics or usability. It's the eternal problem of the never ending branching trees.

The popping out of the "tags" concept represents a real paradigm shift! Tags are not defined in a central way (by an administrator of a directory) but by the websites editors themselves.

Indeed, it is the blogger who defines the categories related to the content to be published (blog post, note or article) in this new approach. A dedicated field in the edition form allows him/her to connect a series of keywords related to the content of the note. These words are chosen 'ad hoc' by the editor according to the topics developped in his/her article.

We are definitely in a Web 2.0 and contributive logic with the tags system.

With this decentralized system of categorization, we introduce the idea of a vast ecosystem of keywords on a global linguistic scale which can be potentially "captured" (indexed) by the search engines, provided their technology allows it. Blogdimension.com. is now one of these systems indexing the tags.

Instead of getting sucked into designing categories artificially and centrally which is a pure non-sense if we consider the Web is live, we, at Blogdimension, chose to implement a technology allowing to recognize and to index not only the links of the articles and blog posts but the tags as well. The retrieved tags are stored into a special database and counted. The more often a tag appears, the more it is listed at the top!

So, we get a long list of tags sorted in decreasing order of frequency.

The "tags cloud" represents a limited selection of the most popular keywords assigned by the bloggers to their articles or postings and found in our index!

The "tags clouds" can vary from a search system to an other since each brand has its own sorting formulas which are often an industry secret. Some search engines propose a "hit parade"-type of listing, some other do not propose anything.

One can clearly perceive the semantic power of these "tags clouds" and their statistical role since they allow to carry out trend analysis of the content published. It makes it possible to know the topics most favored by the bloggers. Moreover, on the other side, one can imagine to collect and analyse the most clicked through or searched for tags in order to get the reading tendencies. There's just one step to be able to follow up the consumer trends!

"Tags clouds" are valuable tools for all those who need to take some sense out of the Web and the blogosphere: communication, advertising, intelligence agencies, marketing departments, political parties... In short, it is a function essential to all kinds of trend setters.

A "tags cloud" is a momentary snapshot of the blogosphere. The clouds can even be compared following various criteria: in the timeline, according to a profile of users, with regard to particular events, sociological criteria or seasons.

Alternative search engines and the "subjective Web"

The history of Internet led us through roughly 6 different stages reflected by the contents found in the World Wide Web:

* 1993-1995: most of the content to be found in the Web was from universitarian and scientific origin,
* 1995-1997: then came the era of personal webpages indexed by the first portals and search engines,
* 1997-1999: corporate websites and webmerchants started to flourish,
* 1999-2001: press media went totally online. Other media (TV, radio) were condemned to stay off-line because of the weakness of the bandwidth!

Then came a technological leap: broadband...

* 2001-2006: during this period the Web became suddenly richer (rich media) and more participative allowing multimedia files to be delivered and exchanged online. Blogs appeared, MP3 music systems like Napster paved the way with Peer-to-Peer systems. Immediately followed by video online sharing systems and voice over the net. The Web 2.0 was born making it possible for everyone to become a consumer and a producer of the content.
* 2007: this date is crucial since it marks the upcoming of virtual life and mobile and Internet convergence.

Gigantic and incumbent search engines like Google, Yahoo or MSN due to their longevity encompassed all these periods and therefore succeeded in indexing all kind of contents in their databases.

This enormous accumulation of content by the leading search systems during the web evolution can be considered as an asset in regard with the vast choice of sources offered to the users.

But it is not really! Historical search systems are overwhelmed by too much "noise" content making it difficult to find straightforward relevant content. Their links databases are spoiled with too many obsolete and commercial content making it hard to bring satisfaction to the users.

Great moment for Blogdimension.com, the Web 2.0 Search Engine! We are proud to announce the launch of Blogdimension.com in Chinese.

It is not conceivable to ignore such a great language and civilization even for a search company. Today Chinese (Mandarin) is among the most spoken languages in the World. Tomorrow it will be the first language of Internet.

So, after English, French and Spanish versions, Blogdimension releases now the Chinese version of its search engine oriented primarily on Web 2.0, RSS and multimedia content.

Chinese users can now find blogs, forums, news feeds, images, audio & podcast and of course online videos like "6.cn" in Chinese.

All this was possible thanks to Gao and Suying whose knowledge of the Chinese languages, culture and Web 2.0 context were crucial for this project.

Why a Chinese version for Blogdimension ?

China has its own search systems like Baidu, Bookee, Zhuaxia, Qikoo, Booso, etc. which are excellent, effective and adapted tools for Chinese users.

Blogdimension's aim, we insist on it, is not to appear as competitors to the Chinese search systems. It's by a wink to this famous Ricky Martin's song meaning "A step forward!" that Blogdimension.com announces the release of the Spanish version of its Web 2.0 Search Engine!

The Spanish version is the third to be launched after the French and the English ones. Thus, Blogdimension.com gives the possibility to a community strong of around 350 million speakers to access and search Web 2.0 content such as blogs & microblogs, forums, news, podcasts, online videos published in Spanish.

Of course, the "advanced search" function enables the Spanish speaking users to zoom in content published in the different countries composing the Hispanic world. These sources can be located as well in Spain, Latin America, the United States than in other places of the world.

We are conscious that a powerful 'blogosfera' is now emerging in these linguistic areas. It would not have been very wise not to do something for such a vast and influent community in terms of Web 2.0 content search. So we didn't ask ourselves too many questions whether we should release or not a Spanish version of Blogdimension.com! We released this version naturally.

We will let you know about our further developments. New top languages are already in progress and will be launched very soon ;-)
